Reviews

“Eduard Stan is a 32-year-old pianist who pricks up one’s ears, whom it pays to listen to attentively. Where others pay court to great gestures, develop star-mannerisms, likewise with seeming virtuosity, with mere firework-effects, Stan’s qualities lie deeper. Of course, no doubt he has an impeccable control over his finger craftsmanship. But furthermore, he is a master of the (difficult!) art of simplicity, of the essential. And this is what makes the difference in this touching, very special piano playing …

With the Chopin pieces and Franz Schubert’s sonata D 960 in B flat major (for example the 3rd movement with lively Scherzo-agility, or the 4th movement “Allegro ma non troppo” with finely-chiselled withdrawing restraint …), the breath-taking ability and potential of this pianist is heared as more than a passing flash talent. One perceives the wholely unbelievable creative and spiritual depth, maturity and composure of this pianist.

If you wish to have the wings of your soul spread out to float through the air, if you want to refresh and revive your spirit, listen to Eduard Stan!”

BLINDFLUG-KULTURKALEIDOSKOP - Germany

”Stan – one of the great specialists of the work of Franz Schubert – manages a wonderful interpretation of the Sonata D 960, wonderful in terms of delivering a message with such care and diligence, as well as modelling the poetic inner feeling and the more lyrical aspects of the piece. His clear manner of expression transforms the Sonata into a marvellous musical picture, transporting sensitivity and emotional depth, so necessary elements for the three last Sonatas of this Austrian composer. Projecting this work of great harmonic significance, Stan is looking for a clear tone-production, as he also does in the Busoni transcriptions in which the main theme clearly rises above the secondary voices, presenting us with a Bach of astonishing transparency.

Stan’s distinguishing characteristic in his piano playing is elegance. He relaxes with the lyrical sections, creating moments of tonal blossoming and unfolding, proving to be, as shown in the Chopin pieces, without a doubt a personality overflowing with emotion. Although his playing is full of rubato, Stan is able to maintain a flowing musical line with profound depth of expression. This CD is highly recommendable to those who would like to enjoy a first class performance of Bach, Schubert and Chopin.”

MUSICA CLÁSICA - Spain

“As a tribute, Eduard Stan has dedicated his CD to the pianist Dinu Lipatti, who has probably been one of the last ones pursuing a Bach style in the spirit of the romantics, anxious not to render a virtuoso glamour, but on the other hand becoming famous for an inspired pianism distinctly marked by an inner shine. Thus, following Lipatti’s traces, Stan gropes carefully towards Schubert and Chopin…

Stan’s smooth touch, his calmly pulsating radiation of the contrapuntal structures imparts to the music a meditative and cryptic character, a mood which is also transferred to the late Schubert sonata in B flat which now appears in a completely new light. Chopin’s Nocturne in E or the two Mazurkas also prove: Stan is a master of gentle piano sounds.”
